Hey small business owners! We launched our Square Register Stand last week, and thanks to you guys, it was an instant hit. We’ve been working hard on fulfilling your orders and listening to all of your feedback. It seems that many of you have questions about our upcoming features, which we’re going to answer here in as much detail as we can.

Our three exciting updates:

  1. Tilting feature for customer interaction
  2. Free logo etching. Seriously.
  3. Super sleek, 100% acrylic version

triple-tilt .

1. Tilting feature

Once you (the seller) swipes the customer’s credit card, you’ll then need to turn the screen over to them to sign their name. To do this, we’re incorporating a swivel in the post so you can quickly flip the screen to face the customer. The iPad display would re-orient itself quickly to be right side up.

Why is tilting the iPad better than swiveling the base?
Tilting the iPad is a simpler and more elegant solution. Unlike a swiveling base, the motion is swifter, and you actually get a hard stop. We’re building it to be robust enough to go back and forth hundreds of times, and we’re also putting in a cushion so it lands well on both sides.

How much will this cost?
Because the Square app requires the customer to sign a credit card transaction, it will soon come standard on all of our register stands. Putting in a tilting frame is extra work, so we’ll need to raise the price $25 to cover for the extra labor. If you don’t need the feature, now’s a good time to get one.

When is this feature coming out?
Mid to late May. It’s available now!

2. Free logo etching

We were originally charging extra for laser etching, but now we’re throwing it in. Why? Because know the challenges of starting a small business. Branding is important (and often expensive), and there’s no better place to put it than at the point of sale.

The Tinkering Monkey logo won’t even show to the customer – it’s hidden behind the iPad, just so you have a reminder that it came from our little workshop :)

3. 100% Acrylic version

acrylic
The 100% glossy acrylic version is coming out soon, and it’s seriously going to rock. Because they’re acrylic, they’re going to cost more, they are going to be sleek! You’re going to love them.
tap-acrylics
The acrylic version will come standard in black and white, but we like doing custom work, so for an extra fee, we’re going to offer it in a rainbow of colors.

I was excited to find the wood stands, although they are priced rather high. But Tinkering Monkey sold me a plywood stand that didn’t fit my version 1 iPad as advertised. After I complained, they changed the website to clarify that it only fits later iPads, but wouldn’t refund my money or send me a stand that fit. I had to put a lot of time and effort with my own tools to adapt it. And they wouldn’t even refund a part of the price to represent the work I had to do to fix their product. They were pretty unhelpful. I think there are better options out there that are priced more reasonably. Just a thought.

    Alan,

We’re sorry that things didn’t work out for you. We would just like to clarify that we did offer a refund, minus $25 to cover the cost of the base that had your company logo etched onto it and shipping back to us. We wouldn’t have been able to re-use the base again after it had been customized.
Our wood stands have always been made for the iPad 2 or 3 only, simply because the frame is made from 1/2″ plywood, something that we buy in bulk. The iPad 1 would require thicker wood, so we never offered that option. Our website change was to simply bold the text stating that the wood stand only fits the iPad 2 & 3. We have since added a version selector as a redundant check to ensure that this information is known when ordering.

Again, we’re sorry that it didn’t work out well.

Any consideration of making one for the IPad Mini?

Yes! Glad you asked. Look for it in early 2013.
